Starting July 23, new counter hours will be implemented in the Housing Division. The Housing Division will be closed to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays to accommodate staff cuts. A drop box will be installed to allow clients to leave information during closed days. Housing is also working with IT to establish a phone system and information on the City website that will provide information and the ability to obtain forms.

STAR Education, through its SAGE (Sustainable Agriculture Gardening Education) Project, is spearheading a campaign to develop a new community learning garden in Culver City to serve the population here and on the Westside of Los Angeles. STAR’s goal with the SAGE Project is to create an innovative new experiential learning garden that will meld the gardening spirit and goals of the Westside community with a groundbreaking educational experience for LA’s youth.

There are currently two potential sites under discussion, one close to the intersection of College Boulevard and Jefferson Boulevard, owned by West LA College and the other a six acre plot currently owned by the LA County Board of Supervisors in the Baldwin Hills Conservancy. STAR Education is reaching out to the community seeking potential steering committee members and supporters to take part in forming and planning this new community garden.

The Culver City After School Program registration begins on July 24 for all sites: Linwood Howe, El Marino, Farragut and El Rincon Elementary schools, as well as Culver City Middle School. To register, please call the Recreation Registration Office at 310-253-6650.

CarFit will be held at the Culver City Senior Center on Saturday, July 28th from 8:30 am to noon. CarFit is an educational program that targets mature drivers 55 and older. A trained Occupational Therapist, OT Assistants and volunteers provide a twenty-minute 12-pount check to ensure that driver “fits” their car properly for maximum comfort and safety. The event is full but there is a waiting list for those who are interested. To be added to the waiting list, call the Senior Center at 310-253-6700.

Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services is offering a presentation at the Culver City Senior Center on Monday, July 23 at 1 p.m. Come and hear about services available including counseling, peer support groups, housing information and other health related activities. Like all of our informational workshops, this presentation is open to the public.

The Culver City Police Department is adding a new way to communicate with the community. We will utilize a communications service that allows us to send important valuable community information directly to residents using the latest technology. The system is named NIXLE, which is very easy to use.

The NIXLE Community Information System allows us to create and publish messages to be delivered to residents instantly via cell phone text message and /or email. Notification can also be accessed online at the NIXLE’s web site at www.nixle.com. The service is reliable and free for our community to use.
