$2.6 million nutrition program awaits Board of Supervisors’ okay

Culver City seniors in need of home-delivered or congregate meals are being included in a $2.6 million county nutrition program slated for approval by the Board of Supervisors on June 14.

The Culver City allocation is $206,942.

Congregate meals are meals served in group settings to people 60 years and older.

The county’s Community and Senior Services agency provides home-delivered meals to qualifying senior citizens in over a dozen cities throughout Los Angeles County through its Elderly Nutrition Program. Through the Culver City Senior Center, many local seniors receive meals via the Home Delivered Meals Programs, said Shelly Wolfberg, Culver City’s assistant to the city manager.

In addition to the county allocation, Culver City is asking for just more than $10 million from the state for the Adult Services Program and the Senior Nutrition Program.

“These two budget requests are critical to the provision of older and senior adults in Los Angeles County, specifically from Culver City, which received over $189,000 from the county this fiscal year,” wrote Mayor Jim Clarke.

Clarke noted that for some seniors enrolled in the nutrition initiative “this may be the only meal of the day.

“Both of these programs are vital to the health and safety of the growing and vulnerable older adult population throughout California.”
