What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is an alternative discipline that restores proper function to the nervous system by adjusting misalignments in the spine that can impede proper nerve function.

These misalignments affect the body as a whole: structurally, emotionally and chemically. Chiropractors believe in the body’s “innate intelligence,” which allows it to heal itself as long as the nervous system is functioning properly.

Through manual administration of gentle, non-forceful adjustments which help restore proper function, chiropractic medicine restores health without the use of harsh medications and surgery.

Modern chiropractic was founded in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer of Davenport, Iowa. Palmer was well versed in many medical journals and articles.

After he applied a manual manipulation to a deaf janitor Harvey Lillard, Lillard’s hearing was restored.

While modern chiropractic originates with Palmer, manual manipulations have been traced back to ancient writings in China and Greece, some dating back as early as 2700 B.C. Hippocrates advised, “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases.”

There is a belief in some quarters that chiropractors only treat the spine is a misconception. In fact, chiropractors treat headaches and migraines. Neck pain, upper and lower back pain, disc herniations, bulges & protrusions, sciatica and tendonitis.

In addition, it can be helpful in easing symptoms of asthma, women’s health issues, chronic ear infections, acid reflux, c and many other unwanted ailments.

Although chiropractic has met with controversy and criticism from mainstream medicine in the past, in recent years it has finally become a respected and recognized discipline.

Today, Doctors of Chiropractic work in tandem with other health care professionals, and chiropractic services are covered by many health insurance companies, including Medicare.
