Sprinters run away with league crowns

The Culver City High School sprinters excelled in the Ocean League Track and Field Championships, last Thursday, at Beverly Hills High School.

The Centaur boys swept the 4×100- and 4×400-meter relays. Culver’s boys 400 relay ran away with the race at 43.71 seconds, winning by nearly two seconds over runner-up Beverly Hills (44.98). Runners included anchor Alex Jackson, Jim Haywood, Mario Paschel and Anthony Luckett.

In the 4×400, Culver, which already ran a 3:15 in an earlier meet for one of the tops in California, won clocking three minutes and 19.71 seconds. Runners included Lucas Nozick, Luckett, Jonathan Moniz and Jackson. The Centaurs had a battle with a very good Beverly Hills squad, which finished second in 3:20.98.

Luckett also added a 200-meter dash win timing 21.77 and a second place finish in the 400 in 48.75. Along with the Centaurs’ winning relays, both of Luckett’s times are good enough to advance to Saturday’s CIF-Southern Section Prelims at Moorpark High, starting at 8 a.m.

“I am pleased with our performance,” Culver head coach Jamal Wright said. “I am looking for a very good showing in CIF.”

Nozick had wins in the 110-meter high hurdles clocking 15.0 and the 300 intermediates at 40.57.

Also winning two events was Michael Horchin in the long jump with a leap of 21 feet, 5.5 inches and the triple jump at 41-6.

Cody Lewis also made the prelims with a second place finish in the 800 run clocking 2:00.41.

For Culver’s girls, Kenia Bonilla won two individual events and keyed the Lady Centaurs to victory in the 4×100 relay in 48.9. Bonilla won the 200 (25.7) and the 400 (56.95).

Other runners on Culver’s winning 400 relay were Nia Bell, Ryan Bull and anchor Jamiliah Henderson.

Sophomore Kyndahl Carter won the 100-meter hurdles timing 17.0 and was second in the 100-meter dash in 12.89.

Bull also won the 300 hurdles clocking 49.5 and also ran on the second leg of the Centaurs’ 4×400 team that was second at 4:04.72 to advance to CIF. Other Culver runners included Bell, Tristen Bellows and Monique Guizar. All of these girls are sophomores and juniors, which should help them, especially for next season.

The Lady Centaurs also took one-two in the shot put with senior Christina Gibson (35-2) winning and Megan Fuller (31-2) placing second. Gibson was also second in the discus with a throw of 90-11.

Top finishers, overall, advance to the CIF-Southern Section Divisional Championships at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut on May 19, beginning at 11 a.m.
