Rolling out with Angel City Derby Girls

It’s that time of year, spring is in the air and the bruises are in full bloom. The Angel City Derby Girls (ACDG) are back and ready to bring Culver City an exciting year of roller derby. The season rolls in on April 28 at the newly renovated Veterans Memorial Park complex.

Since their 2011 season closer on November 19, the girls of ACDG have been training hard at their new practice space. There are new players, and even more involvement with the community.

Angel City currently boasts being one of the top 10 teams in the Western Region of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. A very high honor, considering there are 40 teams in the West and nearly 150 worldwide. After a strong showing at the 2011 Western Region playoffs in Portland, Oregon, the girls of Angel City have put the Culver City team on the map.

During the home season hiatus, ACDG moved into a cozy new practice space dubbed Angel Headquarters. Roller derby is a hard-hitting sport and the competition is fierce. Angel Headquarters is always jam-packed as the girls spend their free time conditioning, practicing, and scrimmaging. The ladies of ACDG continue to perfect their strategy, their fitness and their technique and will be ready go into battle with any competitor.

In addition to the amazing new practice space, ACDG has added some new faces to the lineup. The league of women is rapidly growing and becoming a well respected team. The excitement continues to build, as the talented players get ready to strut their stuff for the community.

The Rocket Queens have already played two away games with their new roster— their undefeated status still in tact.

The Hollywood Scarlets are mixed with familiar players and plenty of outstanding new talent. The new Scarlet roster will make its debut this weekend at the Dust Devil Tournament, in Tucson Arizona. Last year the team took third place and hopes to place higher this year.

This season will introduce a third team to the league— with new local faces and new teams from all over Southern California to play against. Keep a look out for all the teams of Angel City Derby Girls as they continue to rise in the world of roller derby.

The home season-opener is right around the corner. Dress up in your best red and gold garb, bring the family and make your way down to the fabulous Culver City Veteran’s Auditorium on April 28 at 7 p.m. for an action packed event. The currently undefeated Rocket Queens will take on our neighbors to the north, the Ventura County Derby Darlins, with high hopes in retaining their title. Come cheer on your favorite derby girls or come for the first time and see what the buzz is all about!
