Sisters of Pauline celebrate new bookstore

On Feb. 3, the Pauline Books and Media, located at 3908 Sepulveda Boulevard, celebrated their grand re-opening after a major renovation.

It was 26 years ago this week, Feb. 5, 1987 that the first Pauline Sisters, also known as the Daughters of St. Paul, arrived in Culver City.

The Pauline Sisters invest their lives to bring hope and love through contemporary means of communication, including books, films and music.

When they first arrived to Culver City, they set up a temporary location on Motor Avenue near St Timothy’s Church. They next moved to Washington Boulevard near St Augustine’s Church while their new convent and book center was being built at the current location.

In the fall of 1989, the bookstore on Sepulveda Boulevard officially opened the doors. The Daughters of St Paul already had book centers in San Diego and San Francisco but this became the first in the Los Angeles area.

The building includes a convent, bookstore, screening room for films, and a small chapel.

“After 25 years the store needed to be refreshed. Everything that was here before is still here, it’s just a little closer, “ said Sister Rose Pacatte

The recent renovation was led by local contractor Mike Harvey owner of St. Elmo’s Fire Rigging along with a crew made up of volunteers and the Sisters.

The bookstore is stocked with inspirational books, DVD’s, and music and is open Mon-Sat, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking is free in the parking lot on Sepulveda as well as behind the shop.
