Culver City Council candidates prepare for election

By Brett Callwood

The General Municipal Election will take place on Tuesday, November 3, and with five candidates contesting two available council seats plus three measures on the ballot, there’s plenty to consider. The News is speaking to the candidates, continuing with Kimberley Griffin and Mayor Freddy Puza.

Why do you think you’d be a good addition to the City Council?

As a former employee of the city, I have a unique perspective of how the city works. Specifically with the police department, I know the strengths and weaknesses. I will be able to analyze the (city).

Where do you think the current Council needs to improve?

The current council can and should do a better job of listening to the residents.  I have heard a great deal of feedback that residents don’t feel heard and that when they do speak up, nothing changes and their viewpoint is not considered in decisions that are being made that directly affect them.  More outreach, transparency and actions on comments will motivate participation.

And what has it done well?

Creation of the Civic Assembly was a good decision.  It is a step forward to have more participation from residents in the civic and budget process.

What would your priority be?

To assure that the city is spending wisely.  Fiscal responsibility with city dollars and prevent wasteful spending.  Make sure that departments are fully staffed to insure the city functions properly.  Then address infrastructure concerns.

Culver City is special because…

We have a diverse community with lots or art/culture, the film industry, tech and “mom & pop” businesses.  These qualities contribute to the home town feel and has put Culver City on the world stage for the upcoming Superbowl and the 2028 Olympics.
