The Culver City High School football team will try to get back on the winning track when they travel to La Puente to face Bishop Amat High School on Friday, September 11, at 7 p.m. The Centaurs will go into the game with a record of 1-1 while the Lancers are 3-0.
The Centaurs are fresh off a 42-28 loss to Redondo Union last Friday at home. A seesaw first half turned into a rout in the second half after the Centaurs defense and offense stopped making key stops on defense and impactful plays on offense.
“I thought we played okay on both sides of the ball, but the offense played really well in the first half,” said long time assistant coach Cornell Myles this week referring to the Redondo game. “We watched video on the side lines during the game, and we saw what they were doing but we had trouble stopping them especially in the second half.”
One of the reasons Culver City was having problems with Redondo’s offense was their star linebacker Damarion Boyd played his first game in a few weeks and he was rusty. “The whole defense started missing tackles in the second half and that was the difference in the game,” said Myles. “We have to play a lot better in the open field. We also have to be in the right place at the right time. The defense was grabbing instead of tackling.”
Although losing is never a good cure in sports it sometimes shocks a team into finding that inter fight within their souls to help them find their true identity. “The game against Redondo maybe good for us because this will teach the players to fight through adversity,” said Myles. “We can’t drop our heads. We must keep fighting and get better and we need to be more physical in practice.”
Myles also said the offense needs to improve. “We had passes that were dropped. Those dropped passes would have helped the defense stay off the field. We have to improve and we have the players that can get the job done but we need to work harder every day. We have the talent with players like Nicholas Hoang, Jo’el LaFoe, Kem Anuluoha and many other players that are capable of leading this team to victories this season.”
