The Angel City soccer game, left ACFC feeling hopeful for a win in their next match, with a 1-2 loss to the Portland Thorns. This home event at BMO Stadium kicked off with an amazing performance of the national anthem by nine year old Alessandra Gutierrez. Her prideful and passionate singing left her audience amazed and the players ready to go headfirst into yet another game in their 2026 season. Within the first few minutes the ball was flying up and down the field (the windy afternoon playing with the fate of the game); the first goal was scored by Thorns player Olivia Moultrie! Boos and whines erupted from the crowd as the artfully crafted goal was looked over. Then the stadium exploded into cheers and encouraging phrases as the goal was declared offsides. After a heated 1st half, it was time for the beloved baby race!
The babies were shy at first, hesitating to make their moves, but with support from the crowd (and some encouraging beats from D.J. Ray) they were off! With the lucky baby Michael presented his winning title, the players were back on the field for the 2nd half. As the clock started ticking again both teams were on their A game and were fired up, ready to do whatever it took to get a win. The 0-0 score was still intact and everyone had high hopes and wishes for the turnout. But then another goal came out of the Portland Thorns, dampening the carefree mood. Silence overcame the crowd as once again a goal was replayed and yet again an off-sides announcement was made.
From here the intense game took a turn into a more rough-and-tumble face-off, with a second yellow card charged to the Portland Thorns. This was followed by a bounce-back goal from Portland’s Pietra Tordin in the 75th minute, the first real goal of the match. Their first goal gave Portland the boost they needed to score a second goal in the 94th minute by Sophia Wilson. ACFC then brought in two subs and the final goal of the game was scored by Angel City’s Prisca Chilufya in the 97th minute. This header goal marked the end to the family friendly event that went for 100 minutes and left the crowd rooting for more.
