Hundreds of quality, children’s used books will be available for sale at bargain prices this Saturday, September 14, in the lobby of the Culver City Julian Dixon Library from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The selection for children’s books ranges from board books for younger readers to novels for young adults and every age in between. Many books are in nearly new condition with some being brand new. Sales will only be made with cash or checks. All proceeds benefit the Julian Dixon Library.

Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 123 of Culver City invites everyone to their annual holiday Christmas fundraising party this Saturday, Dec 11th in the Rotunda Room at the Veterans Memorial Building. A full lunch will be provided including a performance by a live band. There will be raffles to raise money for the wounded vets at West L.A Military Hospital. Landscape Architect and Consulting Arborist Pieter Severynen, in two fact-packed demonstrations, will share his 50+ years of experience in orchard planning and planting, followed by actual pruning of fruit trees.

Sunday, December 12th, 2021 ~ 1:30 – 4PM:  With dozens of illustrated details, Pieter will explain how we select trees for our chaotic climate, how to improve the soil,  create desirable tree shapes, and design pruning and maintenance specifically for our area and our needs.

Sunday, January 9th, 2022 ~ 1:30 – 4PM: Pieter will prune the Greener Way orchard demonstrating the principles discussed in the first session,  explaining why he is cutting as he does, with the tools he is using, and addressing your questions.

Join us as we discuss what resources are available to our community’s organizations that our residents depend on, the ever evolving role of philanthropy, its opportunities and pitfalls, and what role the state might play in providing support to these non-profits and the constituents they serve.

This FREE small business webinar will focus on two federally funded programs that assist small businesses with hiring and training costs.

  • The “On the Job” (OTJ) Training Program is a federally funded hiring program that reimburses 50% of the employee’s salary for their training/on-boarding period for up to 300 hours.
  • The “Earn to Learn” program supports and trains formerly incarcerated individuals to gain valuable work experience with sponsorship and full cost subsidy from JVS for up to six weeks.

FOSTER FAMILIES NEEDED FOR LOCAL CHILDREN Children’s Bureau Offering Virtual Orientations

(Los Angeles, CA)     Children’s Bureau is now offering two virtual ways for individuals and/or couples to learn how to help children in foster care while reunifying with birth families or how to provide legal permanency by adoption. A live Zoom Orientation is scheduled on February 17th  from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM hosted by a Children’s Bureau team member and a foster parent.  For those who want to learn at their own pace about becoming a foster and/or fost-adopt parent, a PowerPoint orientation is available.  To R.S.V.P. for the live orientation or to request the PowerPoint orientation, please email rfrecruitment@all4kids.org or call 800-730-3933.

Due to the COVID-19 situation, Children’s Bureau has canceled all in-person foster care-adoption resource parent orientations.

The current health crisis has accelerated the need for foster and foster-adoptive parents to help local at-risk youth stay in their communities. In Los Angeles County alone, the foster care population exceeds 33,000 children with 200 of those foster children waiting for an adoptive family. Many of these children are siblings in need of families who are willing and able to keep them together. In fact, Children’s Bureau turns away at least 10 sibling sets weekly due to lack of families.  Older children are also in need of families.

“Being a foster parent lets you help someone in their time of need. You’re the support system for a child and for their parents,” says Brittany, who with her husband Jeremy, foster-adopted two sibling children.  The couple has three biological children and knew that fostering was something they wanted to do.  “Children’s Bureau has been there to help get us through the challenging times and to celebrate the special moments, especially when the adoption of our two children was finalized,” Jeremy added. Children’s Bureau welcomes every individual regardless of race, age, religion, disability, marital status, ethnic background, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression to become a resource for children.
