A total of 27 students primarily comprised of sophomores and juniors visited some of the top colleges in the nation over spring break. Traveling across five states on the East Coast, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey and New York, Candice Mackey, guidance counselor and Lead College Tour Coordinator, alongside Rebekah Howard, guidance counselor and chaperone, arranged for students to visit the college campuses of 12 universities: Harvard, Yale, Brown, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Columbia University, NYU, Boston College, Northeastern, Tufts, Emerson and Wesleyan.
Students were able to learn about the majors and academic programs offered at each of these schools as well as tour campuses, witness student life, meet with admission representatives, and interact with current students attending these top-rated prestigious universities.
Students overwhelmingly reported their experience visiting college campuses across the country on the “East Coast College Trip” was motivating, insightful and very helpful with developing their prospective college lists, goal-setting and providing them exposure to their interests and likes and dislikes as it relates to finding the right college “fit.”
“Although this is the first college trip of its kind taking place at CCHS, we would like to continue to offer students and families of CCUSD the opportunity to visit a wide range of colleges in and out of state,” Mackey said.
Beginning July 1, 2013, the State of California changed the funding formula for public education and requires school districts to develop a Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP). The LCAP is a plan that aligns the District’s educational goals with financial resources.
School sites are aggressively seeking input in the Local Control Accountability Plan. They continue to meet with ELAC, PTA, School Site Council, Booster Groups, teachers and staff to discuss the following four questions: What is our school doing that is helping your child’s success in school? Academically? Social/Emotionally?; What would you like to see improved?; What would you like to see our school do to help your child’s success in school? Academically? Social/Emotionally? and What assistance can we provide you (communication, training, etc.) so you can better assist your student?

Additionally, we are required to seek input on eight priorities established by the State of California. While you may not find each area applicable to you as a parent we would appreciate you completing a survey and providing us with additional feedback. Save the date. El Rincon Elementary School will be hosting its largest event, the Science Rocks Fair & Festival, from 2 to 8 p.m. on Friday, April 24. There will be tons of fun for everyone to enjoy, including an engineering contest, bake-off, live music, food, silent auction, astronomy dome, wild animals, asteroid presentation, engineering zone, mobile museum, and so much more!
