Unbeaten track and field teams compete for league titles today

For the first time in Culver City High School history all four track and field teams finished the regular season unbeaten. The varsity boys and girls, and the freshmen and sophomore boys and girls did not lose a meet this year. Today at Lawndale high school the Centaurs hope to win league championships in all four divisions at the Ocean League finals that start at 4 p.m.

“I am really proud of the whole track and field program,” said head coach Jahmal Wright. “Everyone did a fantastic job. The runners, jumpers, coaches, trainers, team managers and volunteers worked really hard all season to give us the opportunity to win track meets. We all came together at the right time.”

The boys’ varsity team will rely on sprinter Jarrett Anderson, hurdler Robert Samuel and long-distance runner Abraham Vazquez to score winning points. The girls’ varsity will look to all-purpose performer Nia Garcia to score in four events. She will be competing in the triple jump, long jump and the 100 and 300-meter hurdles. Joylyn Dailey is hoping to win the 100 and 200-meter sprints.

Freshman Jasmine Marrero, who is undefeated in 100 and 300-meter hurdles, will lead a strong group of underclassmen. All four teams will showcase strong Culver City tradition: fast relay teams.

The boys’ volleyball team beat Beverly Hills 3-0 last Tuesday on senior night inside the Del Goodyear gym on the Culver City campus. With that win the Centaurs grabbed sole possession of second place which guarantees them a spot in the CIF playoffs.

The girls softball team is 10-8 overall and 3-4 in the Ocean League. If the team expects to make the playoffs, it needs to win its next three games starting today against first-place Santa Monica at 3:15 p.m. The girls’ last two games of the regular season will be at home against Hawthorne next Tuesday and Beverly Hills next Thursday. Both games will start at 3:15 p.m.

“I think we are ready to make a playoff push,” said Mariko Rooks, who plays catcher and outfield. “We really need to bring it these last few games. We really need to push through and put it all together and prove that what they are saying about Culver City softball is true.”

The boys’ lacrosse team loss their first playoff game 12-11 against Palisades in double overtime at Palisades last Monday. The Centaurs finished their season with a 6-11 overall record and 6-2 in league play. The girls lacrosse team finished their season last week with a record of 11-9-1 overall and 2-4-1 in league play.

The baseball team has three very important games remaining on its regular season schedule. The team hosts Hawthorne today, travel to Beverly Hills next Tuesday and return home for its final regular season game against Beverly Hills a week from today. All three games will start at 3:15 p.m.

The Centaurs need to win at least two out of their three remaining games to make the playoffs. Their series against Beverly Hills will probably determine if they make the playoffs.
