Penalty prone Centaurs air out 41-15 victory

The Centaurs travel to Redondo Union High School, Friday, 7 p.m., to build on their convincing 41-15 victory last Friday night over Palos Verdes Peninsula. Culver City tossed its way to the non-league win in its first home game as senior quarterback Xan Cuevas and wide receiver Julius Wilson combined for 35 points, despite the team’s 15 penalties for 162 yards.

“We will watch film and correct the mistakes. We will be OK,” said head coach Jahmal Wright.

Wilson scored first on a two-yard touchdown run. After the defense made a couple impressive stops, Cuevas found Wilson for a 49-yard touchdown, giving Wilson his second score in the first quarter. The Centaurs kicked a field goal halfway through the second quarter to go up 17-0.

After recovering an onside kick, Cuevas connected with three different receivers for touchdowns, but all three scores were called back because of penalties.

“A couple of those penalties were on me, holding the ball too long,” Cuevas said “We just have to talk about it and work as a team to fix the mistakes.”

The Centaurs did not allow Peninsula to cross midfield until late in the third quarter when it scored on a one yard quarterback keeper, 20-7.

Cuevas hooked up with Wilson on an 86 yard reception for a 27-7 advantage. Wilson finished the game with 2 catches for 133 yards and two scores.

Peninsula responded with a touchdown on a 5 yard run and a two point conversion, 27-15.

Cuevas threw his third touchdown of the night to Donovan Davis on a 17 yard reception midway through the fourth quarter. Cuevas finished with 206 passing yards.

Stanley Norman returned a 28 yard interception for the final score, 41-15.

“We came out wanting to start out strong, because last week we came out pretty slow.” “We need to focus on playing a great team this week and come out with intensity and play hard,” said Norman.

“We have a long way to go before we are the team we should be,” said Cuevas.
