They say good things don’t last forever. Last Friday at Segundo Culver City’s girls basketball four year winning streak ended in the Ocean league when El Segundo defeated the Centaurs 55-46 at El Segundo. They were 41-0 going into the game against El Segundo.
The good news is the Centaurs started a new winning streak last Saturday when they beat Price 54-42 and on Monday they defeated Eagle Rock 39-25 in the Serra Martin Luther King Tournament. “Everyone wants to beat us in the Ocean league,” said head coach Julian Anderson. “It’s great because that’s what you build your program to be, which is a championship program.”
This year the team is rebuilding and they are trying to teach the younger players what it means to be a champion. “The younger girls don’t know what means to be a champion at this level,” said Anderson. “When you come from middle school and travel ball they don’t realize that high school basketball is a lot different. It’s is a lot more intense.”
One player who knows how to win championships is senior, Kailey Tooke. She has played on a CIF championship team and several league championship teams at Culver City. “We are a young team and we have a lot to learn but we will get better,” said Tooke last Monday. “We need to develop our team chemistry and stay focused and composed”
The Centaurs received more good news last weekend when sophomore Lauren Jones returned to the lineup after missing over a month due to a shoulder injury. The 5’11 Jones maybe the best player on the team.
The 9-7 Centaurs have a 1-1 record in the Ocean league and they host Hawthorne on Friday at 6 p.m. and Beverly Hills on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The 9-10 boys basketball team will be at home against Hawthorne on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Wednesday against Beverly Hills at 7:30 p.m.
