Culver City High senior Olympia Jewett advanced Friday, June 4 to the California State Track and Field Prelims, only to fall short of advancing to Saturday’s final.
After jumping more than 38 feet in winning the CIF-Southern Section Division II triple jump title May 22 and taking third in the Southern Section Masters Championships on May 28, both at Cerritos College, Jewett traveled to Buchanan High in Clovis, located just southwest of Fresno. In temperatures hovering around 90 degrees, Jewett managed just a leap of 36-5¾ that was only good for 16th place overall. It was four positions short of making the final 12 in the event.
“Throughout the season, Olympia accomplished something that noone here at Culver City accomplished,” Culver City head coach Jamal Wright said. “She was Ocean League and CIF-Division II champion. Making the state was a big accomplishment.”
Winning the event at Saturday’s finals was Clovis’ Jeana Prandini with a leap of 42-71/4. Finishing second and third, in order, were Clarra Brewer of James Logan (41-101/4) and Mt. Pleasant’s Cydney Leath (40-3).
Long Beach Poly won the state girls team title with 51.33 points, easily outdistancing second-place Clovis (28). Finishing in a three-way tie for third were Inglewood St. Mary’s Academy, James Logan and Oakland St. Elizabeth with 21 points each.
The Jackrabbits easily won the meet despite just one event title. That was accomplished by their 1,600-meter relay team that won in a national-best time of 3 minutes, 39.15 seconds.
On the boys side, Jesuit of Carmichael edged Gardena Serra, 36-34, for the state crown. Jesuit was sparked by R.J. Frasier, who won the 300 intermediate hurdles in a time of 36.9, also ranked the top mark in the nation.
Long Beach Poly was third with 32 points.
