The 2015 Culver City high school football team held its’ annual football banquet last week at the Culver City Elks Lodge. The big winners this year were long time coach Greg Goodyear and all-purpose player Mason Mulvihill.
Goodyear received the Culver City Football Life Time Achievement Award for his dedication to the Centaur program. “Coach Goodyear has spent his whole life trying to make the program great,” said head coach Jahmal Wright. “As a player and coach he has always put his best foot forward for the community, school and team.”
The first ever Life Time Achievement Award was presented to Goodyear by former Centaur star quarterback Marquel Carter. “Marquel gave an outstanding presentation,” said Wright. “He talked about how Greg tries to get players in college and how he travels all over America to see former Culver City players play on the college and professional level. Greg is truly a Centaur for the ages. He gets a lot of love from the football program.”
All-purpose player Mason Mulvihill also received a lot of love the football program at the banquet. He was named the teams’ Most Valuable Player, Co-Offensive Player of the Year in the Ocean League and All CIF first team wide receiver. “Basically he never came off the field,” said Wright. “He was the heart and soul of the team.”
Other players that received awards were Richard Yoshida who was named to the All-CIF team and first team Ocean League as an offensive lineman. Yoshida was the leading vote getter in the Ocean League for offensive linemen. Mekhi Ware made All-CIF and first team Ocean League as a defensive back. Ware intercepted nine passes last season.
On offense Kyle Johnson made first team Ocean league at wide receiver, Fred Poindexter was a first team running back, Jonathan Martin made the first team as a quarterback and on defense linebacker Antwon Smith was a first team selection.
Players that made the Ocean league second team were defensive lineman Kyle McKinniss, linebacker Elijah Zavala and defensive back Justin Cox.
The Centaurs finished the season with a record of 7-4 overall and 4-1 in the Ocean league. They lost their first round CIF playoff game to Pacifica on Oxnard.
