The principle espoused by head coach Jahmal Wright and running backs coach Aki Wilson, the second-leading rusher in Culver City High School history, that you can never have too many running backs was proven accurate last Friday in the Centaurs’ come-from-behind 21-17 win at Redondo High School.

Fifth-string ball carrier Akili Shannal, called up from the junior varsity squad, was pressed into duty when the four others higher on the depth chart were out nursing injuries or faced other issues.

“Akili made a great block late in the game, setting up Kevin Porche for the huge play that won the game for us,” said assistant coach Greg Goodyear.

On the sidelines were running backs junior Zakee Johnson, senior Crae Taylor, senior Marquise Smothers and junior Kavan Buggs.

The varsity and JV squads are 3-0. On Friday, the junior varsity squad won 42-18 over the Redondo High Sea Hawks.
