Three of the Culver City winter sports teams appear to headed in the right direction. The girls soccer team, girls’ basketball team and the boys’ basketball team have senior leadership and young talent that puts them in a position to have a successful season.
The girls’ soccer team is 1-1 after they beat Torrance last week 1-0. They have seven seniors and several underclassmen that has head coach Scott Mair excited about this season. “It’s not just the seniors that will make this team better,” said Mair who has been coaching the Centaurs for 10 years. “We have a really good mixture of players at all different levels. My biggest problem right now is managing all the injuries.”
Mair thinks this years’ team is starting to really come together. “The team started to bond early,” said Mair. “We did a beach run and that really brought us closer together.” Talent will also keep a team happy and Amanda Jaramillo and Megan Gerez are playing at a high level. “Amanda will be up top and Megan will be in the back line. The spot light will be on those players.”
Other players to watch on the girls soccer team are, Emily Cardena, Melissa Ramirez, Karen Anaya, Hazel Valle, Madisen Roberts, Daisy Gomez, Jasmine Herrara, Sterre Hesseling, Maryilyn Hernandez, Emily Zamudio, Daneille Martinez, Katherine Benitez, Marina McNairy, Dezyier Jones, Samamtha Simon, Celeste Cerecedes, Jackie Mair and Shelby Miyamota.
This year team mom Ginger Jaramillo has made Mair job a little easier by organizing fund raisers and helping out in any way she can.
The next game for the soccer team will be Saturday when they travel to the Ganesha Tournament in Pomona for an 8:45 a.m. game against Alverno of Sierra Madre in the Pasadena area and their second game of the day will be against Bassett of La Puente at 11:45 a.m. On December 16 they travel to Compton to face Centennial.
The boys’ 2-2 basketball team will also play in a tournament this weekend when they travel to play in the Inland Empire Classic against Redlands East Valley at Rancho Cucamonga High school at 12 p.m. on Saturday. , December 15 they travel back to the Inland Empire Classic to battle Grand Terrance at Colony High school at 4 p.m.
The 4-1 girls ’a basketball team loss 57-40 last week to the Notre Dame Academy on Overland Ave. in West Los Angeles.
