Culver City softball player named to All-Big Ten team

Raised in Culver City with nearby community colleges and universities itching to snatch her last year when she graduated Marymount High School, Megan Blank had already cast her decision years earlier while playing sports at Culver City parks and playgrounds to attend the University of Iowa.

Her father, James, was born and raised in Iowa City, and her mother, grandfathers, great grandfather, aunts and uncles are all University of Iowa alumni.

Blank has made the most of her freshman campaign on the Hawkeye softball team, earning second team All-Midwest region selection, first team All-Big Ten honoree and two-time Big Ten Freshman Player of the Week. She started all 53 games at shortstop and led the team with a .390 (60-of-154) batting average with 34 runs and 29 RBIs. She is the ninth player in school history to garner first team All-Big Ten and all-region recognition as a freshman.

She pounded the first home run of her softball career in an early season victory over Central Michigan.

“I was rounding first pretty hard and then I heard everyone cheering in the dugout. I couldn’t believe it,” said Blank of her first round tripper.
