Let’s get ready for Culver City football. The three Culver City football teams will be on display this Saturday when the freshmen, junior varsity and varsity teams showcase their talents on the Centaur football field. The freshmen will scrimmage the junior varsity at 3 p.m. and the varsity will scrimmage at 6 p.m. in the Blue and White game.
“Fall practice is going really well,” head coach Jahmal Wright said. “We are excited about the upcoming season and we are ready to defend our Ocean League title. This team is very close team and all the players reported to fall camp in good shape. For the coaching staff and the players it’s all about making sure we are all on the same page.”
It’s a new year and with a new season come new problems. The Centaurs will need to find a way to replace several players that graduated and transferred.
“We wish all of those players good luck but we have to concentrate on the players who are here at Culver City,” said Wright. “We have a lot of good players on the 2014 team.”
Some of the impact players returning on offense are running backs Donovan Davis and Anthony Polk and wide receiver Reynard Saxon. All three of those players are also expected to play a major role on the defensive side, along with defensive lineman Fred Wadibia.
“Fred is injured right now but we still expect to have a good defense,” Wright said. “Fred is an outstanding player but we won’t rush him back until he is healthy.”
According to assistant coach Greg Goodyear the Centaurs will run the ball more this season.
“We have three or four good running backs this year and we have a good offensive line so we will probably take advantage of that,” Goodyear said. “Don’t get me wrong, we will still put the ball in the air. That’s Culver City football. We have to be balanced.”
Another change for the Centaurs this year will be in the kicking game with senior Anthony Caiseres taking over kicking duties this year.
The Centaurs will be playing this season with heavy hearts after the passing of coach, Rick Hudson.
“It’s a huge set back for us,” Wright said. “Rick wore a lot of different hats for all of our football teams. We are playing this season in his memory.”
