When you drive by the Culver City athletic fields during after school hours you will always see a lot of activity. Right now the boys and girls track and field teams, football teams, baseball teams and boys and girls lacrosse teams are busy playing games or practicing.
Track and field, baseball, football and many other athletic programs at Culver City have been very competitive for many years. Now you can add lacrosse to the group. The varsity boys’ lacrosse team climbed into the top 20 rankings this week according to Power LAX.
Against Brentwood last Monday the Centaurs, who are 4-3 overall and 2-0 in the Ocean league, came out on top by beating the Eagles 6-5 in a hard fought contest. Brentwood is ranked No. 17 while the Centaurs are ranked No. 20. “It was a slow and sloppy game,” said assistant coach Adam Eskridge. “We have played a lot of games the past few weeks so our legs are tired.”
Against Brentwood Sebastian Casillas scored two goals, Peter Pina had two goals and Brandon Owings scored two goals. Goalie Cole Thompson was outstanding making 16 saves. “When we are on our game we really play well,” said Eskridge. “Anthony Overton and our goalie Cole are really doing a great job right now. The whole team has to find a way to get the job done.”
Culver City’s main competition in the Ocean league this year will be Santa Monica, El Segundo, Downey and Beverly Hills.
The track and field teams travel to El Segundo today (Thursday) at 3 p.m. for a dual meet and they will compete in the Mustang Relays at Mira Costa high school on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.
