Boys’ basketball gets first Ocean league win

The Culver City boys’ varsity basketball team recorded its’ first Ocean league win last Friday when they beat Hawthorne 79-51. The Centaurs are currently 10-10 overall and 1-3 in the tough Ocean league.

They hope the second half of the season produces better results than the first half. The second half starts with a trip to Lawndale on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Centaurs return home next Wednesday to face El Segundo at 7:30 p.m.

“We started to look more like ourselves,” said Culver City head coach Adam Eskridge after the win over Hawthorne. “The effort was better, the ball movement was better and the rebounding was better. This was a must win for us.”

The Centaurs are in fifth place in a six team league so if they expect to make the playoffs they need to move up in the standings. “Every game we set goals and against Hawthorne we were able to meet most of our goals,” said Eskridge.

“In the second half of league play we need to play better, stay focused and go after loose balls,” said Eskridge. “We have been really hurting as a group but we need to get back to having fun.

The girls’ basketball team is tied for first place with an overall record of 11-7 and 3-1 in the Ocean league. They travel to Lawndale on Friday for a 6 p.m. game and return home on Wednesday to face El Segundo at 6 p.m. The Eagles handed the Centaurs their first Ocean league loss in four years a few weeks ago so the Centaurs are looking forward to the rematch.

The girls soccer team is 10-4-2 overall and 2-2 in the Ocean league. After opening league play with two wins, they lost two games last week to Santa Monica and Hawthorne. They play Lawndale at home on Friday at 3 p.m. and travel to El Segundo next Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match.

The boys soccer team is currently 6-8-3 and 1-3 in the Ocean league. They travel to Lawndale at 3 p.m. on Friday and host Santa Monica next Friday at 6 p.m.
