‘Angel’ of the month

Julius Pleasar came to Angel City in 2011 with a dream in his heart and stripes on his torso. The dream? To become a Women’s Flat Track Derby Association certified referee.

WFTDA is the international governing body of women’s flat track roller derby.

He has achieved that status and more.

Roller derby leagues rely on hundreds of officials. In order to ensure that WFTDA sanctioned bouts and tournaments are staffed by the most qualified and capable officials, the WFTDA created a process of evaluation and certification.

As the WFTDA grows in both size and prominence, it is critical to recognize those officials who exhibit the best ability, implementation of the rules, fairness and consistency across the board.

Pleasar is now a Level 2 certified referee and one of the mainstays of the Angel City Derby Girls official crew ‘Parks & Refreation.’ He is regarded as the morale officer for the crew.

“He’s a great guy. Whether it’s calling you out for a penalty on the track or calling you out for something silly off the track, he’s always got a smile on his face. And always helpful when you need it,” said Stubborn Pup, a skater on the Road Ragers team.

He is also a liaison for officials, attending team practices weekly to provide skaters with valuable rules insight.

Pleasar is a consistent contributor to ACDG’s creative and marketing endeavors with his artistic and computer savvy talents.

“His ideas are amazing and make the league poster and graphics really pop,” said PitBull PinUp.

Julius Pleasar recently accepted a job in Portland and will be leaving the league in the spring.

“He’s been an extremely valuable asset to ACDG and we are happy for his new opportunity but sad that he’s leaving us,” said skater Delilah Decider.

“The team wishes him the absolute best and are overjoyed with the contributions he’s made to ACDG over the past two years. We know we’ll be seeing him at future tournaments as he continues to rise in the ranks of WFTDA certified officials,” the league said in a public statement.
