There are some days that are perfect sport days. If you are a Culver City High School sports fan today is one of those days.  Four sports will be in action today when the girls’ softball team takes on rival Beverly Hills at 3:15 p.m.; the boys’ baseball team battles Hawthorne at 3:15 p.m. and when the boys’ volleyball team faces Beverly Hills at 3:15 p.m. Rounding out the action on the Centaur campus will be the track and field meet against two Ocean League schools.

Girls’ softball hopes that their pitching can keep pace with their hitting. “Right now our pitching staff is struggling a little,” said veteran coach John Sargent. “Our best pitcher, Jessica Faber, was injured during a ski trip a few weeks ago and that hurt us a lot.  She is a senior and we need her on the mound.”

Offensively the 6-3 Centaurs are in good shape.  They have scored 89 runs with 64 hits and they have blasted nine home runs.  They also have five players currently batting over .300.  Leading the pack is senior Lisa Kamba who is hitting .591 followed by freshmen Mary Bibao at .471, sophomore Sabrina Perez at .435, junior Alex Thomas at .412 and sophomore Melody Rodriquez is batting .375.

The boys’ and girls’ track and field teams are led by seniors Kevin Beacham and Kyndahi Carter. Beacham is one of the top long jumpers in the state and one of the best hurdler prospects in the CIF Southern Section. Last weekend at a South Bay Invitational meet in Torrance, the boys’ 4X400 meter relay team placed second behind Crenshaw High School and Jarrett Anderson placed fourth in the 100 meters.  Carter dominated the girls hurdle races and won the 300 hurdles and placed second in the 100-meter hurdle race.

The boys and girls lacrosse teams will battle Beverly Hills in home and away games on Friday.  The boys will be host the Normans and the girls will travel to Beverly Hills. The boys’ game will start at 6 p.m. and the girls contest will start at 4:30 p.m.

The West Los Angeles baseball team will end its season on Friday at 2:30 p.m. when they take on Antelope Valley College.  The 4-27 Wildcats had a Laker-type season but coach Bob Grant is looking to the future.  “We have a lot of freshmen and we hope they get better next year,” said Grant last week.  “We need better pitching and we are going to recruit players for every position.”

In pro sports the Dodgers will end their 10-game-home stand on Sunday when they finish their three-game-series against the Colorado Rockies.  Today they complete their four-game-series against the Phillies at 7 p.m. and play the Rockies at 7 p.m. on Friday, 6 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Dodgers are currently in first place in the Western Division of the National League and are led by the hitting of Dee Gordon, Adrian Gonzalez and Juan Uribe.
