If last week’s games are any indication the Culver City girls’ volleyball team is ready to defend their Ocean League crown.  Last week they beat a very good St. Paul team three games to one on Thursday and they won four out of five games at the North Torrance Tournament over the weekend.

Against St. Paul, who came into the Centaur gym with a record of 8-1 and ranked No. 3 in their CIF division, Culver City came alive after St. Paul won the first game 25-19.  The Lady Centaurs came back to win the next three games to win the match.

“That was a real good team we played against today,” said Culver City head coach Joe Manzo after the victory last Thursday.  “”That was our first real battle test. We made some mistakes but we are learning and we will improve.  Overall it was a great win.”

It was also a good win for senior captains Taylor Selfridge and Mina Grant.  Selfridge is the outside and Grant is the digger and passer.  “They are Culver City girls volleyball,” Manzo said.  “They both started playing for Culver City in the 9th grade. Taylor and Mina are the inspirational leaders of this team.”

Against St. Paul the two Centaur captains had a lot of support.  The other Culver City players that played well against St. Paul were Armani Moultrie, Adili Rikondja, McKenna Stevens, Taylor Burks, Jessica Stewart, Lena Johnson and Krista Hernandez.

“The team did a good job today,” Selfridge said after the St. Paul win.  “Everybody will have their time to shine.  Right now it’s my time.  I have been working along time for this.”

Culver City’s other captain Grant was also happy with the win.  “We showed a lot of Culver City spirit and pride today especially after we loss the first game,” said Grant.  “I am proud to represent Culver City and leave a legacy for the younger players to follow.”

The Centaurs next game is today at 4:30 p.m. in the Del Goodyear gym on the Culver City campus against Bishop Montgomery.
