Culver City looks for first win against Paramount

Centaur linebacker, junior Kyle Lyons runs back a first quarter interception to give Culver good field position.

The Culver City football team is looking for their first win of the year against a good Paramount team Friday at 7 p.m. on the Centaur campus at the Jerry Chabola field.  Culver City is 0-3 and Paramount is 2-2.

Last week Culver City loss to San Pedro 38-17 after the Centaurs fell behind 17-0 at halftime.  The Pirates were led by running back Chris Alvidrez and quarterback Jacob Miller.  Miller completed only four passes but two of them went for touchdowns.

Once again mistakes and mental errors made it difficult for the Centaurs to put together a complete game.

“We are still making too many mental mistakes,” assistant coach Cornell Myles said.  “We are trying hard but it looks like we have to go back to the drawing board and work on the basic things that will help us win football games.  Things like knowing where to be on certain plays on defense.”

According to Myles the good thing about playing San Pedro before facing Paramount is they are the same type of teams.  Both teams have a strong running game and they play tough defense.  They look like the old Hawthorne teams of the 1980’s and 1990’s.

Culver City’s highlight play of the night was when Donovan Davis returned a fumble by Alvidrez 90 yards in the third quarter to cut San Pedro’s lead to 24-10.  The Centaurs are young but time waits for no one.

“We are going to keep this team together,” head coach Jahmal Wright said after the loss to the Pirates. “We are three games into a 10 game season so we have time to fix our problems. We just have to find a way to get the job done.”

Some of the players that are moving in the right direction are Davis, Cahlil Hooper, Kyle Lyons and quarterback Quintorius Truitt who stepped in for injured starter Xavier Ryan in the first half.  “Quintorius played well tonight,” assistant coach Aki Wilson said.  “We just have to get better in every phrase of the game.  We work on things in practice but it’s not carrying over to the games.  We have to execute better and all 11 guys on the field have to be on the same page on every play.  Although we are losing I do see some improvements.”
