Doggy diets downright delicate Lori Fusaro | Thu, Aug 12 2010 02:33 PM

By Lori Fusaro

It’s summer and that means backyard barbecues, delicious summer fruit and lots of extra treats for the family dog.  If your dog is anything like mine, the begging never stops. And of course, I’m a sucker and will accidentally drop a few tidbits on the ground for her.  What I didn’t realize is that some of my favorite summer foods can be harmful to dogs.

Summer fruit like peaches, apricots and nectarines are some of my favorites, especially the ones straight from my neighbor’s tree.  I was surprised to learn that the pits of all stone fruit contain cyanide.  Now I make sure to pick up any dropped fruit that has fallen into my backyard.  Avocados are also harmful to dogs (and cats), because of a toxin called persin.  It can cause upset stomach, vomiting and even pancreatitis.

Believe it or not, careful consideration needs to be given when tossing your dog a bone.  For instance, cooked chicken bones can splinter and get stuck in the throat or intestines, but so can other types of cooked bones.  It is always best to play it safe and choose ones that are from a pet store, made especially for dogs.  My dog, Gabby, loves them.

Other human foods that could potentially cause harm include garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, nutmeg, chocolate and large amounts of fat.  Wow.  Who knew?  Now that I do, I make sure I only give Gabby treats that I ---know are safe for dogs. When I’m feeling adventurous, I’ll even make some from scratch. This is one of her favorites and perfect for a hot summer day.

Pupsicles

1 very ripe banana mashed

1 cup plain yogurt

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 cup water

Mix well, put in ice cube trays and freeze. Yum!

Great addition to the paper!
Telling all my pet owning neighbors (and that's most of them) about this new segment. Thanks!
