The L.A. GOAL Program, a nonprofit organization which provides opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities, will be offering its annual one-day art exhibition and benefit art sale on Sunday, Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Hosted by the Kaplin Del Rio Gallery in Culver City, the exhibition will display original paintings and drawings, multi-media, sewn works of art (purses, pillows, and baby blankets), weaving, embroidery, and ceramics. All of the artwork, which is done by members of L.A. GOAL, are for sale and priced at $40 to $500. Reproductions of original designs are featured on greeting cards, T-shirts, aprons, baby one-pieces, pillowcases, and “tea” towels. Prices for these items range from $5 to $125.

The collection of art was made by the 22 adult members, between the ages of

18–65 that participate in L.A. GOAL’s art program three days a week. There will also be a tribute dedicated to Justin McCowan, a long-time friend and L.A. GOAL member, who passed away on Sept. 20, 2014, at the age of 40. McCowan’s artwork will be displayed at the exhibition as well.

All proceeds from the sales aid in funding educational, vocational, and recreational programs by L.A. GOAL and their mission to provide an increase to independence and employability for adults with developmental disabilities.

“The L.A. GOAL Program provides everyone with an opportunity to grow,” says Laura O’Neal, Development Director for L.A. GOAL. “We give ways to work on communication skills and self-esteem with every program that we offer.”

The annual exhibition and benefit sale is one of the many opportunities for members to go into the community to advocate for themselves. It is a rewarding experience for them to interact with others and tell the stories behind the artwork that they have spent their time and talent creating.

“I teach the members how I would teach anyone else, says Kirsten Ushijima, Director of Visual Arts. “Their confidence becomes more apparent as they continue with the program.”
