The “Heart” is still pumping strong at 94 Elizabeth Moss | Thu, Sep 01 2011 11:51 AM

Happy birthday, Culver City. “The Heart of Screenland” is turning 94 and the Culver City Historical Society is throwing a bash for the old gal with music, silent movies, appetizers and cocktails.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to come out and celebrate the city’s 94th anniversary in such a great town for all of us who live and work here and to support our local historical society and its mission in the community,” said Stu Freeman, president of the society.

Former mayors Jozelle Smith and Andy Weissman will lead a raffle and auction, which will feature, among other items, a hand-painted “Tom and Jerry” cell, created by long-time city resident Martha Sigall (Culver City’s favorite resident, as voted by readers in the annual “Best of” contest).

The party gets under way at the Culver Hotel on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 5:30 p.m. and runs till 9 p.m. (late for being 94 years old). The sounds of Doozy, a band specializing in tunes from the 1920s and 1930s, will entertain attendees and the historical society encourages everyone to celebrate in frocks from that era.

Tickets are $45 per person in advance ($50 at the door) and reservations are required. Checks should be sent to the Culver City Historical Society, Box 3428, Culver City, CA 90231-3428. Tickets may also be purchased at the society’s Archives and Resource Center on Saturday, Sept. 3 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds will benefit the society’s Museum/Archive and Resource Center (ARC) and support its mission in the community.
