Summer passing leagues help develop players for the fall season

Youth, high school, college and professional sports have become a year-round commitment.  After their seasons are over most serious athletes start training, sometimes the next day for a season that’s six to nine months away.

In high school football summer passing leagues is the beginning to what players, coaches and fans hope to be a successful fall season on the football field. “Passing leagues are extremely important because it helps develop new varsity skill players and it fine tunes the veteran players,” said Culver City head coach Jahmal Wright.

For the past four weeks the Centaurs have participated in some of the best passing league tournaments in Southern California. Two weeks ago the Centaurs won the prestigious El Rancho tournament. Culver City won six games to reach the finals against Crescenta Valley.  They beat the Falcons  28-21.

Three weeks ago they competed against several outstanding Division 1 schools in another tournament. They were 3-1 in pool play. They won their first game in the single elimination round and they lost to powerful Gardena Serra 28-7 in the quarterfinals.

Offensive players that have played well during the summer are Charles Ross, Kevin McGuire, Alex Smith and Jamal Glaspie.  On defense the Centaurs have relied on Jordan Armstrong, Cortez Wright and Smith and Ross.

Culver City will host two passing league games against Brentwood today (Thursday) and next Wednesday inside the Jerry Chabola Stadium on the high school campus. Both games will start at 5 p.m.

The annual Alumni Football Game will take place next Thursday, July 6, at 5 p.m. on the football field.
