Summer leagues heats up

Most of the Culver City high school students are going to the beach, vacationing with family and friends are just relaxing and getting ready for fall classes. If you are playing football you are running, lifting weights and getting ready for the fall season. It’s that time of the year again.

Culver City’s next passing league game will be Thursday (today) at 5 p.m. against Verbum Dei.

“We are progressing nicely,” said varsity head coach Jahmal Wright. “The players and coaches are working hard and the players are getting stronger every day. Right now we have to deal with a few injuries but we will be okay.”

Last years’ starting quarterback, junior Jonathan Martin and senior Bryce Lewis-Wolfe are back under center, but both players are working on being more consistent according to assistant coach Greg Goodyear.

“The good thing about the quarterback situation is we have some good receivers to throw to,” said Goodyear. “They are not as tall as the receivers we had last year but this group may be faster.”

Senior Justin Cox, who plays receiver on offense and defensive back on defense, will be one of the best players in the Ocean league. “We are expecting a lot of big things from Justin,” said Wright. “This is his third year on the varsity so he is ready to take on that leadership role.”

Overall Goodyear likes what he sees. “We are a head of where we were last year at this time but we are still a work in progress. We need to keep improving to reach the level of championship Culver City football.”

Next Thursday, July 7, at 5 p.m. the annual Culver City high school football Alumni game will be played on the football field. All former football players are invited to participate or just come out to see some of your former teammates and coaches.
