The Culver City Historical Society will designate Dr. Paul Carlson Memorial Park as Historic Site No. 12 in a noon ceremony May 22.
The 2.66-acre park located at the intersection of Braddock Drive and Le Bourget Avenue was the city’s first park, designated as Victory Park in 1927. The Culver City City Council changed the name in 1964 to honor Dr. Carlson, a United States medical missionary who was born in Culver City in 1928 and was killed in 1964 while serving in the Republic of Congo.
A bronze plaque will be unveiled to mark the park as a historic site. Lois Carlson Bridges, the widow of Dr. Carlson, is scheduled to attend the ceremony, alongside city dignitaries, members of the Culver City Historical Society and city staff. The public is also invited to attend.
A special exhibit featuring Culver City parks will be on display at the society’s Archive and Research Center, located in the back of the Veterans Memorial Building located at 4117 Overland Ave., from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on the first and third Saturday of each month and by appointment.
