Silly Putty and paper airplanes take center stage

The amazing Family Science Night took place at Linwood E. Howe Elementary School May 22, 2013. First, we were separated into two groups.

Then, we were divided into nine stations: “Silly Putty,” “Paper Airplanes,” “DNA isolation,” “Spaghetti Structures,” “Art,” “Lego Engineering,” “Ecology,” “Hot Versus Cold,” and “Balloon Rockets.”

At the Silly Putty station we used water, food coloring, glue, and a mystery solution to make the putty. The second station was Paper Airplanes where we learned how to fold paper to make the best paper airplanes.

The third was isolating DNA from strawberries.  hosted that one. We used soap, water, salt, a funnel, measuring spoons, and rubbing alcohol to collect the DNA. Next was Spaghetti Structures.

We used marshmallows and uncooked spaghetti to make strong structures. Then we did Hot versus Cold.

The goal was to create two reactions: one hot and one cold. We used baking soda and citric acid to make the cold reaction and hydrogen peroxide and yeast to make the hot reaction.

At the Ecology station they talked about the ocean environment and how animals and plants interact in their environment and how pollution affects them. At the Balloon Rockets station, they made a slingshot that launched balloons across the room on a string.

They used balloons, a straw, tape, string, and a close pin to make the rocket launchers. Finally, we did Lego Engineering. The kids made cars that could move on their own.

They used legos, motors, axels and gears. All of which were real. The last of all the experiments was Art.

Even in art there is science. We used crayons, pastels, and water to make beautiful art. So, after we were done we gave a round of applause to the host, my teacher, Mrs. Abascal.
