Prestigious arts program accepts three Culver City students Scott Bridges | Thu, Jul 22 2010 03:32 PM

Three of Culver City’s most talented students are attending the California State Summer School for the Arts and, upon graduation, will be named California Arts Scholars.

Angela Bac, Emanuel Sayes and Tamara Mosher from Culver City High School were granted a total of $2,770 in scholarship funds to study visual arts at one of the most prestigious summer high school arts programs in the country. Students who complete the program receive three units of California State University course credit and are presented with the Governor’s medallion, the state’s highest distinction for -artistically -talented students.

Of the nearly 1,300 applications, 600 students were selected. Now in its 24th year, the program has trained more than 11,500 students from all 58 counties in California and beyond. Alumni include actors Zac Efron and James Franco and singer Katherine McPhee.

The school’s mission is to nurture the next generation of artists and arts professionals in animation, creative writing, dance, film and video, music, theatre and visual arts. It is a rigorous four-week residential program in which students study and work with professional artists, writers and performers of national stature.

Legally, the program must reflect the diversity in the state and no student is denied admission solely because of an inability to pay. Nearly 40% of the students who attend the school receive partial or full tuition scholarships and nearly $4 million has been awarded to date.

The California State Summer School for the Arts and Arts Foundation receives support from The Herb Alpert Foundation, The Annenberg Foundation, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Paramount, Pixar, Sony Pictures, The Weisman Foundation, Union Bank of California, BNY Mellon Wealth Management and The Surdna Foundation. The program is held at California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). This year’s session runs from July 10-Aug. 6.
