New season, same excitement at CCHS

One of the great things about high school sports is there is always another sport around the corner.  High school sports are divided into four seasons, fall, winter, spring and summer.  Each season brings a different brand of excitement and thrilling moments.  Last Saturday the Culver City athletic fields were full of young athletes showcasing their skills

Baseball, softball, boys and girls lacrosse and boys and girls track and field teams opened up the spring season with a bang. The baseball and track and field teams competed against other schools and the softball and lacrosse teams held practices to get ready for their opening games this week.

On the track the Culver City teams proved once again that they have one of the best track and field programs in Southern California.  Led by one of the best track and field coaching staffs in California the Centaurs unleashed a powerful group of athletes that dominated the Ocean League Relays at Culver City last Saturday.

A good example of their dominance was the performance by all-purpose star Sam Robert. Robert won the 100-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles, ran the third leg on Culver City’s second place 400-meter relay team and won the pole vault with a personal best of 12 feet.

This Saturday the excitement continues on the track when the Centaurs host the Culver City Invitational Track and Field Meet that starts at 10 a.m.  Some of the top talent in Southern California will compete for early season bragging rights.  Dorsey, Carson, Serra. South Torrance and Lynwood are just some of the schools that will compete against the Centaurs on Saturday.

Boys head coach Jahmal Wright was pleased with the overall performances of the boys and girls. “I thought will had a good showing,” said Wright. “It was a good start for us and it showed how hard our athletes have been working.  What I like about our athletes is they did not wait until the season started to start working. They started in the pre-season.  It is going to be exciting to see our athletes’ blossom as the season progresses.”

There are 120 boys and girls on the four track and field teams and that puts a smile on the face of the girls head coach Rayfield Beaton.  “Every year our numbers keep going up,” said Beaton who is a former USC All-American 400 and 800 meter runner. “I really enjoyed watching our team compete in their first meet of the season.  We have a young team and they are going to make mistakes but overall we are looking forward to another great track and field season at Culver City.”

The baseball team loss to Woodlawn Hills Taft 4-2 last Saturday at Culver City and they are currently 0-1-1 at press time.
