Meeting set for overflights, noise impacts on CC residents

A Panel and Discussion on Impacts of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on Culver City, including Overflights and Noise, will be hosted on Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 6 to 8 pm.

This community meeting will take place in the Rotunda Room of Veterans Memorial Building, located at 4117 Overland Avenue in Culver City. The Panelists include Culver City Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells and Councilmember Jim B. Clarke; City Council-Appointed City Representative and Alternate to the FAA Noise Roundtable, June Lehrman and Stephen Murray; and City staff members.

Culver City Mayor Sahli-Wells is encouraging residents and business owners to attend the community meeting.

“We look forward to hearing community input on this important issue, as we are eager to understand everyone’s concerns, regarding current and future impacts of LAX,” the mayor said.

Culver City resident June Lehrman was appointed by the City Council to represent the City at the FAA Noise Roundtable, which addresses LAX noise issues.

According to Lehrman, there are three goals for the upcoming Culver City community meeting regarding the LAX overflight/noise issue.

“First, we want to verify our observations of a dramatic increase in overflights and a dramatic lowering of altitudes over the City since 2012, and increasing every year,” Lehrman said. “Second, we want to alert the public about the re design of the airspace by the Federal Aviation Administration as part of its ‘Nextgen’ initiative, including its ongoing ‘Optimization of Airspace Procedures in the Metroplex (OAPM).

“OAPM aims to streamline airport procedures, and it can have dramatic unintended consequences for those living underneath new or altered flight paths, as is being experienced by residents in Phoenix, Arizona, Park Slope Brooklyn, Palo Alto, and other cities nationwide,” Lehrman added. “We believe this may be already happening here, and we don’t want it to continue unabated. Third is to provide folks the opportunity to voice their concerns, provide a unified forum, and establish an organized program for bringing our concerns to LAX, the FAA and if need be, the United States Congress.”

Individuals who are unable to attend the meeting, but who wish to provide the City with written comments may do so by any of the following means before 4 p.m. on Feb. 24 via: a Letter to the City Clerk, City of Culver City, 9770 Culver Boulevard, Culver City, CA 90232.
