Literacy Fair returning to Mar Vista | Thu, Apr 15 2010 01:46 PM

The Mar Vista Family Center will hold its sixth annual Literacy Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 17.

The literacy-focused event will include volunteers reading aloud to families and children of all ages. Special guest readers include actress Belita Moreno (The George Lopez Show and Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and author Joshua Potter-Efron (Being the Difference).

More than 600 parents and children are expected to attend the fair, which will also include reading-themed games, costumed characters from favorite children’s stories and  literacy-focused activities led by students from local high schools, colleges and universities.

“Mar Vista’s mission is to provide low-income families with quality early childhood education, youth enrichment and educational tools to create positive change in their lives and their community,” said Mar Vista Family Center CEO Lucia Diaz in a press release. “For many of the children who attend the Literacy Fair, the books they receive are the first books they have ever owned. You can’t imagine how empowering this is for them — and for their parents.”

The Mar Vista Family Center is located at 5075 S. Slauson Ave. in Culver City. For more information about the Literacy Fair, call (310) 390-9607 or e-mail to ldiaz@
