On Monday, a group of elderly women donated dozens of knit caps to a local nonprofit cancer organization, which will give them to cancer victims who have lost their hair as a result of chemotherapy treatment.
The Palm Court Knitting Girls is composed of senior women at Culver City’s Palm Court Premier Retirement Community who meet weekly to knit and crochet items to donate to those in need. Some of the women in their 80s and 90s had not knitted before. They expressed their delight in providing hope for others.
“It’s a joy for me,” said one of the women. “I’m so happy that I might be able bring someone joy.”
The group offered their collection to Monica Kahn, founder of Helen’s Room, which outfits cancer-stricken women with hats, scarves and other accessories free of charge, while seeking to provide care, understanding and love. The organization is named for cancer patient Helen Rindfleisch, who died after contracting the disease in 1990.
“This is like gold,” Kahn said of the bountiful display of donated hats.
The knitting group consists of Beverly Karp, Mirian Tamkin, Wilma Schorr, Jo Kapp, Gitta Isaacs, Norma Burton, Lilyan Abner, Marcia Matz and volunteer Gail Holtzman, a local real estate agent, who teamed the women with the organization.
For its next project, the group intends to knit lap blankets for veterans.
