Jefferson Boulevard pedestrian and bicycle access improvements project cause to celebrate

The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook has become a popular destination for tourist and local exercisers.

The available street parking has made getting to the park’s entrance dangerous. Visitors must cross Jefferson Boulevard. During high traffic times, this presents a problem.

Until recently, there were no crosswalks and pedestrians had to make a judgment call when crossing the four lane roadway.

“The Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook and the surrounding area are very popular recreational resources. This project enhances the experience by providing a more efficient way for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to get to and from the Overlook,” said Culver City Mayor Andrew Weissman.

A new traffic signal with high visibility crosswalks has been installed at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Hetzler.

“I work out at the stairs 5 days a week and I’ve seen many near misses. The cars come around the curve and can’t always see the walkers. It can be really scary. I’m relieved the city has taken this issue seriously,” said Maureen Ramono, a Culver City resident.

Curb extensions have been built at the intersection of Jefferson and Hetzler and sidewalks filling the gaps along Jefferson leading to the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook have been created.

The raised landscaped median islands on Jefferson near the entrance to the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook will also provide a safe crossing.

Bike lanes from approximately Duquesne to Holdrege avenues have also been constructed. Improvements have been made to the small parking lot area.

“We feel the new amenities will go a long way toward meeting the needs of the many people who live in proximity as well as those who enjoy this popular attraction,” said Mayor Weissman.

To celebrate the completion of the Jefferson Pedestrian and Bicycle Access Improvements Project at Hetzler Road, a dedication ceremony has been scheduled for Jan. 18 at 10 a.m. at the street level parking area west of the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook entrance at Jefferson Boulevard and Hetzler Road. Additional parking for the event will be available at 6000 Jefferson Blvd.
