High school graduations are an important rite of passage, but some teenagers cannot succeed in traditional high school settings and have been told over and over that, due to their special needs or learning disabilities, they are “unteachable.”
On May 30, 14 ECF Kayne Eras School students earned their high school diplomas. With this accomplishment, they are now ready for the next chapter in their lives: attending two-year or four-year colleges, vocational training, employment in the community, or an adult program of the Exceptional Children’s Foundation.
“However, with small class sizes, individualized attention, and the support of highly trained special education teachers, the Exceptional Children’s Foundation (ECF) is committed to reaching and teaching each and every student who enters our doors. The annual graduation ceremony is a tribute to the hard work achieved by both students and faculty,” ECF President and CEO Scott Bowling explained.
“We don’t graduate followers, we graduate leaders. Our students never gave up – and that’s the true definition of success,” said Dwight Counsel, Director of School Programs.
Each year, ECF provides services for 3,200 young children, students, adults, and their families at 15 sites throughout Los Angeles County. ECF is the only organization of its kind in California to provide a lifespan of services for children and adults with developmental disabilities.
