The Culver City News will soon be hosting a Centaurian page within its folds. The possible close of The Centaurian, Culver High’s print newspaper and a Culver City entity since 1951 has caused journalism students to find another outlet for reportage.
The Journalism class through which the newspaper has always been produced faces a low number of student enrollment for this coming 2013-2014 school year
In order to consolidate classes and efficiently distribute teachers, the administration has had to close the smaller classes.
This will possibly force the Journalism class to close and the print paper to cease publication.
However, journalism on the Culver High campus will not disappear. The Culver City News and journalism high school students will begin collaboration this coming school year.
Content will be generated through the weekly Journalism Club at Culver High and regularly published in the Culver City News on the designated Centaurian page.
This allows for high school journalism to thrive, at the same time, accommodating the administrative scheduling changes.
Despite the possible decline of the scholastic paper, English 9 teacher and Journalism advisor for the past eight years, Penny Schulte, is eager to continue the presence of journalism on the Culver campus.
Schulte has agreed to advise the weekly lunchtime Journalism club and plans to make the leap from scholastic to digital journalism.
The rapid shift into the digital age has affected the fate of The Centaurian. “The writing’s been on the wall for a while now,” Schulte said.
Print papers have been slowly losing out to social media and online content. Interest in print journalism has also gradually declined over the years as the presence of the digital age increases.
Therefore, Schulte plans to work with the Web Design class at Culver High to increase the traffic and appeal of The Centaurian website.
The upkeep of the website will also be headed by the Journalism Club. Junior Stephanie Liem will serve as the Culver City News Centaurian page Editor-in-Chief as I, a senior, will work as the page’s publisher.
