Culver Palms Meals on Wheels honors senior citizens

Aug. 21 is National Senior Citizen Day. This observance was established in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan to honor senior citizens in the U.S. who made positive contributions in their communities.

The day was also created to bring awareness of social, health, and economic issues that affect senior citizens. This year Culver Palms will be handing out packets of information to all senior citizens that it serves. The packets containing information provided by the State Bar of California, Southern California Gas Co. and Westchester Playa Village are designed to help connect seniors with services that are available to them. Volunteers who are also senior citizens will receive a packet as a way of saying thank you for their time and service.

In addition to thanking senior citizens they will be hosting a fundraiser on Aug. 21 at Marie Callender’s on National Boulevard to raise funds to help those clients who cannot afford meals.

“We receive no government funding,” Pam Frieden, Executive Director of Culver Palms Meals on Wheels, said. “Therefore, we are dependent upon the generosity of the communities we serve. We do this by collaborating with businesses, holding fundraisers and accepting donations at our website www.mealsonwheelsculver- palms.org.

“This year Culver Palms Meals on Wheels is celebrating 40 years serving the community,” Frieden said. “Please help us continue to serve the home- bound for another 40 years.”
