Culver City PD involved in fatal shooting Scott Tittrington | Fri, Apr 30 2010 10:33 AM

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department detectives are continuing their investigation into a shooting Sunday, April 25 involving a Culver City Police Department officer that left one man dead and another woman in custody facing a murder charge.

According to a sheriff’s department report, Culver City police personnel responded to an armed robbery call at an unidentified Culver City electronics store near the intersection of Motor Avenue and Venice Boulevard at approximately 12:45 p.m. Witnesses reported that the suspect, an adult black male, brandished a chrome handgun and fled the location with merchandise from the store.

While patrolling the area, a Culver City officer observed a vehicle driving erratically and noticed that the passenger in the vehicle matched the description of the armed robbery suspect. The officer pulled over the vehicle, and at some point during the removal of the occupants from the vehicle, the officer-involved shooting occurred.

The passenger was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The sheriff’s department has not identified him while awaiting the notification of the next of kin.

The driver, a female black adult identified as Layla Grissom, 20, of Los Angeles, was arrested and booked for murder at the Culver City Police Station. State law allows any suspect involved in an initial crime that results in someone being killed to be charged with homicide.

A chrome handgun was recovered at the scene.

Lt. Milton McKinnon of the Culver City Police Department directed media seeking information about the incident to the sheriff’s department, which is handling the investigation.
