Culver City humanitarian dies at 62 | Thu, Jul 22 2010 04:30 PM

Debbie Berger, longtime resident of Culver City, died Friday, July 16 at the age of 62. She was beloved by family, church, school and community members who knew her and honored her dedication to her family, the children of Culver City and those in need. She humbly gave of herself each day to make her community a better place. An avid quilter, she made more than 100 baby quilts for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, March 13, 1948, graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1966 and married August Berger four years later. 

She was an employee of the Culver City School District for more than 20 years after she retired from the Maintenance, Operations and Transportation Department. She was a former PTA president awarded for her service and beloved by students and co-workers for her dedication.

Family and friends will gather for memorial services Friday, at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 4427 Overland Ave., Culver City, where she was a parishioner and member since 1981. Her dedication and charitable work will long be remembered.

Mrs. Berger is survived by her husband of 40 years —August Berger — two daughters, a
son and five grandchildren.
