After a one-week hiatus, the Culver City City Council will continue its in-depth examination of the recently proposed 2010-2011 fiscal year budget when the five-man body reconvenes for its regularly scheduled council meeting Monday, June 7 in the Mike Balkman Council Chambers.
While a complete agenda for the meeting is not yet available, one thing is certain — when the council emerges for the open session portion of the gathering at 7 p.m., budget discussions that began May 24 following Interim City Manager P. Lamont Ewell’s initial presentation will resume in earnest as the council and city staff attempt to find a solution for Culver City’s ongoing economic struggles.
According to an official courtesy notification published by the city — which can be found on page 5 of this week’s News — the following city departments are scheduled to discuss their budgets Monday: city council, city manager, city clerk, human resources, finance department, city attorney and information technology.
The council will then reconvene Tuesday, June 8 — and Wednesday, June 9 if necessary — to hear from those departments who have not taken a turn at the podium. That will allow the regularly scheduled June 14 meeting to include a public hearing on all aspects of the budget, at which time Ewell hopes the council will vote to adopt it.
During the May 24 -meeting, Ewell detailed what he is labeling a two-year plan for overcoming an estimated $7.6 million budget gap. Following his presentation and remarks by the council, Culver City Police Chief Don Pedersen and Culver City Acting Fire Chief Chris Sellers in greater detail presented the portions of the budget devoted to their particular departments, with the two public safety agencies tentatively on the hook to cut a combined 13 positions.
