City architect wins ‘New LA’ award for nature center design

The StoneView Nature Center, a recreational structure in Blair Hills designed to attract residents from both Culver City and Baldwin Hills, has won an award from the American Institute of Architects.

The proposed 5 acre, $10.5 million center, which was designed by Stephen Ehrlich of Ehrlich Architects of Culver City, won a 2015 AIA/LA “New La” award, which was announced late last month.

The center will be run by the county Parks and Recreation Dept.

“The nature center will be a unique destination in Los Angeles County. Through its special setting in the heart of Baldwin Hills, and with distinct programming, gardens and exhibits, it will provide a living example of a  sustainable urban ecosystem,” said Second District Los Angeles County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who represents Culver City and Baldwin Hills. “It’s exciting to see AIA recognize the vision for this transformation.”

The nature center, which is being built near the Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook Park, will have a 4,000 square foot community building with a multi-purpose room, a staff office, interior and exterior restrooms, an open terrace and a yoga deck. Other features include surface parking, a demonstration/ community garden, an observation area and botanical and nature gardens.

It is slated to open next summer.
