A celebration event will be held to announce the Dream/Plan Scholarship, which will provide scholarships to reward high learning-challenged school students for their completion of the Individualized Education Plan.
The program is designed to help students work through their learning challenges and advance to higher education. The scholarships, each valued at $5,000, will first be awarded in spring 2011.
“I am thrilled by the response to this new Dream/Plan Scholarship. Four scholarships have already been funded,” program founder Marc Purchin said.
Purchin recently announced that a guitar played by renowned guitarist Philip Sayce at the 2007 Academy Awards was auctioned on eBay and sold for $11,000. Sayce, who is donating all proceeds to the scholarship fund, said “I could not believe it when I heard that there really are no other scholarships available for students who have [Individual Education Plans] who are graduating from high school, who want to continue their education. I am so happy that I could give something back and help make some kids’ dreams come true.”
The event, the “Quad4Dreams — Party With a Purpose,” will be held Sunday in Culver City’s Veterans Memorial Park. People of all ages and abilities are invited to attend. A morning of non-competitive activities will include biking, swimming in the Culver Plunge, volleyball, jogging/walking, live entertainment, a Kids’ Zone and more.
The sponsoring organization, D.R.E.A.M.S (Developing a Responsible, Educated And Moral Society) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which grants scholarships and mentors young people through community service programs.
