Centaurs are No. 1 in 2 sports

No wonder Culver City athletic director Tom Salter is smiling this week. For the first time in school history the Centaurs have two teams ranked No. 1 in their sport.

The 6-1 football team has been ranked No. 1 in Division 11 since the beginning of the season and now the defending CIF champion girls’ volleyball team has climbed to the top of Division 4. The girls are currently 22-1.

Both teams play important home games this week. The girls’ volleyball team will lock horns against Santa Monica at 3:15 p.m. inside the Del Goodyear gym today and the football team will battle Hawthorne Friday at 7 p.m. inside the Jerry Chabola Staduim.

The girls’ volleyball team will celebrate senior night tonight and the football team will celebrate home coming on Friday.

“We know we have a long road ahead of us and we understand that the process has to play out,” said Culver City’s second year head coach Tanner Seigal.  “We still have a lot of room to improve and we want to peak at the right time.”

Seigal added, “Right now our program is second to none.  The junior varsity and freshmen girls always watch the varsity girls and they look up to them. The four senior girls on this team provide a tremendous amount of leadership and their legacy will be how the program moves forward after they leave.”

The football team fell into second place in the Ocean League after their 33-14 loss to Lawndale last Friday.  “We knew Lawndale had a very good team, but we will be ready for Hawthorne on Friday,” said Culver City head football coach Jahmal Wright.
