A nature center in Baldwin Hills took another step forward on April 22 when the Board of Supervisors approved several millions dollars for its construction.
The supervisors, by a unanimous vote, passed a motion that would allot $10.3 million to Stoneview Nature Center Project.
The vote will allow the county and Culver City to enter into an agreement on how the facility is managed.
The proposed center will include a 4,000-square-foot community building with a multi-purpose room, a staff office, interior and exterior restrooms, an open terrace and a yoga deck. Other features include surface parking, a demonstration/ community garden, an observation area and botanical and nature gardens.
After the supervisors greenlighted the plan for the five acre site last April, Baldwin Hills Conservancy Executive Director David McNeil told the News that the center would greatly enhance educational opportunities in the region.
“The Baldwin Hills area has few facilities from which to conduct hands on education, science or stewardship projects,” he said.
The Baldwin Hills Regional Conservation Authority owns the property and will transfer it to the county, which will be in charge of its maintenance.
Other features of the proposed nature center include surface parking, a demonstration/ community garden, an observation area and botanical and nature gardens.
