Author and artist Corinne Lightweaver is using her unique talents to inspire others. Lightweaver is a two-time cancer survivor. Her art, which draws heavily upon collage and assemblage, explores the unconscious story of a brave artist’s journey through the disease.
The Premiere Oncology Foundation in Santa Monica is currently exhibiting Lightweaver’s art, along with a variety of other artists. Patrons will have the opportunity to view the artist’s rendition of her own experiences with breast cancer.
Lightweaver has also written a book entitled In the Breast of Health: Healing from Cancer through Art, in which she writes that she experimented with other artistic media before finding collage and assemblage. She describes how this form of artistic endeavor serves as a powerful vehicle for expressing the cancer journey. The piecing together of materials to create a work that is whole and somehow greater than the sum of the parts functions as a metaphor for the life of a cancer patient.
Her art is filled with archetypes and motifs that serve to illustrate and illuminate the cancer journey. It is painful, yet beautiful and leaves the viewer with bold images that not only linger, but grow stronger over time. Her work has that effect. Her life has that effect. Corrine Lightweaver Selected Works 2008-2010, Collage and Assemblage is an exhibition without inhibition.
The exhibition runs through Dec. 31. The Premiere Oncology Foundation is at 2020 Santa Monica Blvd., suite 600 in Santa Monica. The exhibition is open to the public by appointment only, Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. For more information call Robbie Gluckson, docent, at (310) 570-1474.
